The severity of atmospheres vary geographically and
with the levels of sulphur oxides from fuel combustion
and of chlorides from the sea. These airborne corrodents
can cause corrosion
many kilometres from their source.
A very dry or a very wet environment is less aggressive
than damp conditions that concentrate the corrodents
on the surface. Such conditions make many European
environments more corrosive
than other worldwide locations.
Performance is improved by additional Cr, Ni, Mo
and by smooth surface finishes, 'good design' and
regular washing with fresh water.
O - Possibly consider for more aggresively corrosive
environments
P - Possibly the best choice all round on performance
and price
S - Possibly suitable with smooth finish and with
regular washing
X - Likely to suffer corrosion and rust staining
