Introduction:
Low carbon chromium steels are ferritic and cannot
be hardened other than by cold work. Their yield and
tensile strength properties are similar to 18Cr10Ni
grades but their ductility and impact resistance are
generally much inferior. Some cold forming operations
are also more difficult. Minimum impact values are
not included in Euronorm or ASTM and are subject to
agreement.
X 6 CrTi 12 has a ductile-brittle
transition temperature near or above room temperature
and that of its coarse grained weld zones is higher.
Very low carbon versions give some improvement.
This steel is slow rusting and subject to pitting
and crevice corrosion in aerated seawater. Scaling
temperatures are in the region of 750-800°C.
