Introduction:
This steel is very deep
hardening, meaning that martensite is formed at very
slow cooling rates and in pieces up to 500mm in diameter.
Martensite in this steel is much lower hardness than
that of S41000 and S43100.
This makes this alloy more readily weldable.
The increased nickel content produces a better combination
of properties.
Not very resistant to aerated seawater. Welding is
difficult because high preheat and immediate postweld
tempering is necessary to minimize the risk of hardzone
cracking.
Metallurgy:
In 17%Cr steels, the microstructure changes
from ferritic to martensitic when combinations of
nickel (up to about 6%) and carbon in the absence
of stabilizing elements such as Ti or Nb are present.
