Introduction:
This is an austenitic steel whose machinability has
been enhanced by an increased sulphur content (0.15
- 0.35%). In certain operations, feeds and speeds
can be increased up to 50%. Addition of selenium can
also give the same effect, eg. UNS S30323 has 0.15%
min Se and 0.06% max S.
Even moderate amounts of
sulphur can reduce the pitting and crevice corrosion
resistance. Therefore, the use of a free machining
grade might need reconsideration if the basic alloy
content is only marginally adequate for the corrosive
environment.
This alloy is not readily-weldable because the high
sulphur content causes cracking. 29Cr 9Ni (312) weld
metals containing about 35% ferrite are used to reduce
hot cracking tendencies.
Metallurgy:
Normal austenitic stainless steels are tough, single
phase alloys that tend to work harden. Consequently,
successful machining requires careful attention to
tooling, speeds, feeds, etc. Raising the sulphur content
from the normal 0.030% max to 0.15-0.35% enables some
feeds or speeds to be increased by up to 50%.
