Introduction:
All stainless steels will exhibit some increase of
yield strength, tensile strength and hardness when
cold worked by drawing, rolling, bending, etc. In
this steel, the increases are much greater. For example,
after 20% reduction:

17Cr7Ni is less suitable for deep drawing but pure
stretch formability may be improved as locally strained
regions harden to give transformation induced plasticity.
Corrosion resistance is similar to the 18Cr10Ni S304xx
types, but precautions are necessary to avoid sensitization
to corrosion resulting from chromium carbide precipitation,
eg. during welding.
Metallurgy:
The increased effects of cold working are due to austenite
instability causing some formation of martensite during
cold work. The development of martensite is reflected
in an increased magnetic response.
