Introduction:
This steel has an economic balance of alloying elements to ensure its good cold formability, corrosion resistance, toughness and good mechanical properties without excessive work-hardening. Its low carbon content improves its resistance to sensitization and intergranular attack, and the addition of nitrogen replaces the strength which would have been provided by the carbon.

General corrosion characteristics are similar to S30400 / X 5 CrNi 18 10. Stability and toughness at cryogenic temperatures is high.

This alloy is worth consideration in designs where rigidity is less important than reduction in wall thickness or other dimensions. Design stress factors in BS5500.1991 are some 30% higher than for the comparable low carbon grade which does not contain nitrogen.

Metallurgy:

The overall composition of the S304xx type alloys balance the ferrite-forming elements (Cr,Mo,Si) with sufficient Ni,Mn,C and N to promote stable austenite and prevent martensite formation.

The older and higher carbon 18Cr, 8-10Ni type steels are prone to sensitization and intergranular attack in weld zones and slower-cooling sections. However, the advent of AOD/VOD refining allowed easier production of this less-sensitizable low-carbon (0.03% max) grade.
