Introduction:

These two grades are part of the family of 17%Cr 12-13%Ni steels containing between 2 and 3% Mo (S316xx series). These grades are nitrogen strengthened with 2.0-2.5% Mo or 2.5-3.5%Mo. After 18Cr10Ni (304xx) type steels, these 17Cr12NiMo (316xx) grades are the most widely used austenitics. In the damp industrial or coastal atmospheres of Europe, they perform better than 18Cr10Ni (304xx) and ferritic grades. In low temperature seawater they offer limited resistance to pitting but are susceptible to crevice attack (mean
PREN about 25-27). Their short- and long-time properties at elevated temperatures are also superior to those of comparable 18Cr10Ni grades.

Metallurgy:

Conditions where the steels are not quickly taken through the temperature range 900-500°C (eg. slow cooling, heat-treatment, service exposure, high heat input welding ) can allow precipitation of chromium carbides and sometimes embrittling sigma formation.
Where sensitization to intergranular corrosion around these carbides is unacceptable, consideration should be given to the low carbon (0.03%C max) grades and to those stabilized with either Ti or Nb.
