Introduction:
This 'super' austenitic steel (PREN about 40) has
been shown to have high pitting resistance in seawater.
Compared with UNS S304xx, S316xx and S317xx steels,
it shows superiority against crevice attack in seawater
and far higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking
in boiling concentrated chlorides. Design stresses
for service up to 315°C (600°F) are given
in ASME II.
Metallurgy:
The very high level of chromium plus molybdenum
is balanced by sufficient nickel (and in some versions
nitrogen additions) to ensure a fully austenitic structure.
Copper is also added to aid corrosion resistance.
