Introduction:

Stainless steels not only resist many corrodents near ambient temperatures, but are successfully used at elevated temperatures for their relatively high strength and their ability to resist scaling and attack from air and other high temperature media.

This grade has an intentionally controlled carbon content of 0.04-0.10% which is the converse of the low carbon grades (UNS S30403; X2 CrNi 18 10) preferred for welded components used in corrodents at near-ambient temperatures. The extra carbon increases creep and stress-rupture strength at 550-700°C. Prolonged exposure of unstabilized stainless steels above 400°C may reduce their corrosion-resistance. Such steels are also designated X 7 CrNi 18 9 (ISO) and X 6 CrNi 18 11 (DIN).

Metallurgy:

The overall composition of the S304xx type alloys balance the ferrite-forming elements (Cr,Mo,Si) with sufficient Ni,Mn,C and N to promote stable austenite and prevent martensite formation.

Increasing the carbon content produces precipitates which reduce tendency of the steel to creep at high temperatures.
