Introduction:

The alloy has good resistance to high temperature oxidation, carburization, nitriding and steam and is relatively free from stress corrosion cracking. It has good resistance to cold flowing seawater, but is subject to crevice attack (PREN about 32.5). This alloy is ductile and tough at -253°C. It is not significantly embrittled by prolonged exposure at temperatures associated with sigma formation but some
sensitization can occur - for example, an impact value of 135J after 1500 hours at 760°C is quoted.
Metallurgy:

The chromium content is balanced by sufficient nickel to maintain a tough austenitic structure. Nickel-aluminium and nickel-titanium precipitates strengthen the alloy during prolonged exposure to high
temperatures. The high nickel content aids its good resistance to high temperature oxidation, carburization, nitriding and relative freedom from stress corrosion cracking.
