Introduction:
Long-established under a proprietary designation,
now part of its UNS N08825 number, the 42%Ni, 21%Cr,
3%Mo, Cu Ti alloy derives its broad usefulness in
diverse corrosion conditions from the technologies
of both stainless steels and nickel-base alloys. The
high-nickel content endows relative freedom from chloride
stress corrosion cracking and aids high resistance
to many alkaline solutions. Annealed and/or cold worked
products resist the hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide
in sour oil or gas at high temperatures and pressures.
Particularly useful for plant and equipment exposed
to sulphuric acid, sulphurous acid and sulphur-ontaining
gasses. Weldments exhibit high toughness at low cryogenic
temperatures. Design stress factors are included in
ASME II and BS5500.
Metallurgy:
Nickel, in conjunction with molybdenum and
copper, helps to give outstanding resistance to reducing
environments such as those involving sulphuric or
phosphoric acids. Its chromium content aids resistance
to oxidizing media. The addition of titanium considerably
reduces the risk of sensitization during processing
and welding, but the best corrosion performance is
likely after a stabilization anneal at
940-980°C. In cold seawater, the alloy will generaly
resist pitting but may develop some crevice corrosion.
Its PREN, about 31, cannot benefit from added nitrogen
