Introduction:
This high-alloy austenitic is very resistant to attack
from diluted sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and acetic
acid. It resists pitting in neutral chloride solutions
(PREN about 38). Its resistance to stress corrosion
cracking in some hot chlorides is much superior to
that of the lower nickel austenites. This steel has
good formability and weldability. This alloy is not
part of the present Euronorm standards, but is already
included in ISO 683/13-1986 and ASTM, BS and SEW national
specifications. There are some differences, particularly
in respect of the range of nitrogen, if added. Design
stresses up to 370°C are included in ASME II.
N08320 Alloy 20 Mod. has a very similar composition,
but is Ti-stabilized and is without a nitrogen addition.
Metallurgy:
It is fully austenitic and is less sensitive to precipitation
of ferrite and sigma phase than are conventional austenitic
grades with high molybdenum content.
