S20200 (202)

Printer Friendly Page
Introduction:

High manganese nitrogen-containing austenitic steels are about 10-20% stronger than the widely used stainless steels of the S30400 and similar types. Their resistance to atmospheric corrosion, pitting corrosion, some oxidizing chemicals and to high temperature scaling have been reported as sometimes inferior to the popular Cr-Ni grades. Such factors plus added production and fabrication costs have negated long-term market substitution based on the relative price of Mn and Ni. The Euronorm X 3 CrMnNiN 18 8 7 has lower carbon (0.04% Cmax) and higher nickel (6.5-8.5%Ni) contents compared with 0.15%Cmax and 4-6%Ni in the steels similar to S20200. The lower carbon content reduces the susceptibility to intergranular corrosion after welding.

Metallurgy:

Manganese, like nickel, is used to produce the tough, ductile and formable austenite structure, but is only half as effective. Thus, S20200 and the similar grade S20100 contain typically 4-5%Ni and 6-9%Mn compared with the 7-10%Ni of S30400 and similar types. The following values for section up to 20mm thickness demonstrate the strengthening effect of Mn (MPa).
