Introduction:
This is the world renown '18/8'. It has a reasonably
stable austenitic structure which is not prone to
excessive transformation/work hardening during much
cold forming. Because modern steelmaking in AOD/VOD
converters will now regularly achieve much lower carbon
contents, S30400 and S30403
compositions with their reduced susceptibility to
sensitization are replacing S30200. Corrosion resistant
characteristics are similar to the 304xx grades. Good
formability.
Metallurgy:
The overall composition represents the minimum balance
of chromium equivalent elements (Cr,Mo,Si) against
nickel equivalent elements (Ni,Mn,C,N) that produces
a reasonably stable austenite which is not prone to
transformation work hardening during much cold forming.
