S30451 (304N)

Printer Friendly Page
Introduction:

This steel is a high-strength version of UNS S30400, X 5 CrNi 18 10. It has an economic balance of alloying elements to ensure its good cold formability, corrosion resistance, toughness and good mechanical properties without excessive work-hardening. Likely to perform well in unpolluted atmospheres but may tarnish or lightly rust in damp atmospheres around some industrial and coastal/marine locations. In fresh and potable water precautions should be taken to avoid crevice attack under deposits, etc. Performance in aerated seawater is not good without adequate galvanic or cathodic protection. Its PREN is low: 20-24.
The low carbon version X2CrNiN 18 10 \ UNS S30453 is an option where sensitization to intergranular corrosion of weld zones has to be minimal. Stability and toughness at cryogenic temperatures is high.

Metallurgy:

The overall composition of the 304xx type alloys balance the ferrite-forming elements (Cr,Mo,Si) with sufficient Ni,Mn,C and N to promote stable austenite and prevent martensite formation.
The increased nitrogen improves strength.

    Applications:

  • Used where the extra strength compared with S30400 is advantageous.
Included in the ASME codes and standards for plate, sheet, strip, bars, tubes, pipes and fittings.
This 'KT' grade and a low carbon version are included in Euronorm 141-79 for steels generally used in
pressure vessels for very low temperature service.
