Introduction:
This is a 25 20 austenitic steel with good heat resistance.
The various wrought grades of 25-20 type steels in
international and national specifications have significant
differences in carbon, silicon and niobium contents.
Euronorm 95-79 indicates only minor differences in
average creep/stress rupture properties between 0.2%C
and 0.08%C variants and ASME II ascribes no difference
in design stresses between the niobium stabilized
and the two unstabilised grades.
To improve heat resistance, silicon maxima of 1.5-2.5%
are specified, but such steels become more susceptible
to rapid sigma formation during exposure to temperatures
in the 600-900°C range. For example, the room
temperature impact strength can drop from 100J to
3J.
Resistant to scaling in air up to temperatures of
1050-1150°C depending on grade.
