Introduction:
Molybdenum enhances the corrosion performance of stainless
steel in seawater and in many chemicals.
It will be noted that the Euronorm and the ASTM compositions
are similar but not identical.
Resistance to pitting (PREN about 36) and crevice
attack in seawater is intermediate relative to the
lower Mo and 6.5%Mo steels.
Metallurgy:
This steel is part of a series with nominally
2.25, 2.75, 3.5, 4.5 and 6.5% Mo.
Conditions where the steels are not quickly taken
through the temperature range 900-500°C - eg.
slow cooling or large section heat treatments, high
heat input welding, service exposures - can increase
the risk of sigma formation and should be avoided.
Sigma phase embrittles and reduces corrosion resistance.
