Introduction:

These 0.04 to 0.10% carbon steels have an intentionally controlled minimum carbon content to ensure consistent creep or stress/rupture properties at elevated temperatures. Stabilization with titanium minimizes any associated sensitization and its effects on corrosion
resistance. ISO 2604 includes the comparable steel No. 54, but the
steel with similar alloy contents in Euronorm 95-79: Heat-Resisting Steels (X 10CrNiTi 18 10) specifies 0.12%C maximum but no essential minimum. Temperature limits for low stress service/scaling in air is about 850°C. Below about 550° there are little or no differences between the design stresses permitted for the 0.08%C max and the 0.04-0.10%C grades ASME II and BS5500-1991. At higher temperatures, design stresses for the controlled carbon grades are superior.

Metallurgy:

The overall composition of the 18Cr,8-10Ni type steels balances the ferrite-forming elements (Cr,Mo,Si) with sufficient Ni,Mn,C and N to promote stable austenite and prevent martensite formation. Increasing the carbon content produces precipitates that impede creep at high temperatures. High temperature service and other thermal cycles in the 400-900°C range may produce chromium carbides and sensitization to intergranular corrosion. Stabilising additions minimise these effects.
