X2 CrNi 18 10

Printer Friendly Page
Introduction:

This steel has an economic balance of components to ensure its good cold formability, corrosion resistance, toughness and good mechanical properties without excessive work-hardening. Its low carbon content improves its resistance to sensitization and intergranular corrosion in weldments and slower cooling sections. General corrosion characteristics are similar to S30400 / X 5 CrNi 18 10. Stability and toughness at cryogenic temperatures is high.

Metallurgy:

The overall composition of the S304xx-type alloys balance the ferrite-forming elements (Cr,Mo,Si) with sufficient Ni,Mn,C and N to promote stable austenite and prevent martensite formation.

The older and higher carbon 18Cr, 8-10Ni type steels are prone to sensitization and intergranular attack in weld zones and slower-cooling sections. However, the advent of AOD/VOD refining allowed easier production of this less-sensitizable low-carbon (0.03% max) grade. Reducing carbon content to 0.03% max C incurs about a 10% loss of strength. However, this loss can be offset by adding nitrogen (e.g. X2CrNiN 18 10 / UNS S30453).
