Introduction:

This is the world's most popular stainless steel. It has an economic balance of alloying elements to ensure its good cold formability, corrosion resistance, toughness and good mechanical properties with no excessive work-hardening. It performs well in unpolluted atmospheres but can tarnish or lightly rust in damp atmospheres around some industrial and coastal/marine locations. The steel has been used extensively for potable water tubing and in fresh feedwater systems where precautions are taken to avoid crevice attack under deposits, etc. Performance in aerated seawater is not good without adequate galvanic or cathodic protection. Its PREN is low: 18-23.

Stability and toughness at cryogenic temperatures is high. Readily weldable, but a low carbon grade S30403 or similar is preferred for better corrosion resistance of weldments.

Metallurgy:

The overall composition of the S304xx type alloys balance the ferrite-forming elements (Cr,Mo,Si) with sufficient Ni,Mn,C and N to promote stable austenite and prevent martensite formation.
