Effects of Heating on Corrosion Resistance |
|
Short time heat treatments,
weld cycles and delayed cooling may allow the formation
of second phase precipitates that reduce the corrosion
resistance of some stainless steels. Additionally, the
maximum temperature for very prolonged service of some
steels may need to be limited to about 400°C if
the adverse corrosion effects of sensitization are to
be minimized.
Brittle failures under load have occasionally occurred
from 475°C embrittlement in the ferritic grades
and from sigma formation in the 550-900°C range
in higher Cr and higher Mo steels, particularly those
containing ferrite. A loss of corrosion resistance can
also be expected. |
