ISO and EURONORM standards have existed for over 30 years.

Although many participating countries have adopted ISO standards within their national standards, ISO has yet to garner international control over the designation system for stainless steels.

Euronorm designation names have been harmonized around the highly descriptive abbreviations of composition used for many years in Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain and the Unified States.

For example, X2 CrNiN 18 10 signifies:

  • X for wrought
  • 2 for 0.02% C
  • 8 for 18% Cr
  • 10 for 10%Ni
  • N for added N

In parallel to this descriptive name, new Euronorm proposals include for use within the steel industry, a short numeric code based on the Werkstoffe Number (eg. 1.4311 for the above steel).
In this database, compositions and properties are given for the many established Euronorm designations and for similar American UNS (Unified Numbering System) compositions that may not be identical.
